Music

Music plays a major part in school life at St Bernard's Preparatory School. We hold many concerts and pupils regularly have an opportunity to perform, regardless of ability. The whole school sings in weekly assemblies, liturgies and Masses as well as part of the class music curriculum. We understand that children live through their imagination and all children engage in a variety of creative activities. We aim to promote the awareness and appreciation of music through the fun of learning, as well as imparting the knowledge, skills and understanding to make music. All year groups receive a weekly music lesson from a musical specialist. Year groups are taught in half term themes such as:

Pre Early Years and Early Years 1 (Tuesday):
Music and Movement, class singing, individual repetition and recall rhythms, the Christmas Nativity.

Early Years 2 (Thursday): music vocabulary - pitch and tempo, whole class singing, world songs, the Christmas Nativity.

Year 1: music vocabulary - pitch, tempo and dynamics, Music and Movement, class and group singing, Christmas songs.

Instrumental lessons - More than a third of our pupils learn instruments, and many of these pupils take part in our co-curricular programme. Tuition is available in a large selection of instruments, pupils have the opportunity to take music instrumental examinations, as well as perfroming regularly in our concerts and productions to further their skills and enjoyment. Informal concerts encouraging public performance happen regularly. They are supported by staff and pupils alike. Pupils are presently taking lessons in piano, drum, flute, clarinet, violin, electric guitar, classical guitar and singing lessons. Lessons are taught for individual half hour lessons. For further information please contact Ms Johnson, the Music Co-ordinator, via the school office. St Bernard’s is proud of the 100% pass rates achieved in music exams in recent years and we can help pupils train for music scholarships to attend grammar schools in the future.
