Academic Excellence

'The quality of the pupil’s achievement and learning is excellent.'                       ISI Inspection, May 2014

At St Bernard’s we aim to take every child in our care on a most extraordinary journey, and one which nurtures their talents and provide the skills and experience to last a lifetime. It is our privilege to be responsible for your child’s development through these formative years. Challenge, encouragement and the pursuit of excellence means that our pupils very often lead the way, achieving success in a broad range of areas. High quality teaching accelerates the progress expected, especially in Maths, Reading and Writing. Our school focus is to add ‘value’ to our pupils in all areas of their development, encouraging them to take the next step they require as an individual.

The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for students. The Junior Challenge is aimed at the top third of pupils in Year 8 or below in England and Wales. For the last nine years we have entered our most able mathematicians for this competition, even though it is aimed for pupils two years above. We are always proud of all our children’s achievements but feel a special ‘glow’ at their success in the challenging UKMT competition.

On the 30th April 2019, 20 of our Year 6 pupils took part in the UK Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC), which is run by the UKMT.  It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. 3 achieved Gold standard with 1 pupil progressing to the Kangaroo Round. Congratulations to all who participated in this challenge.
