Dear Parents and Carers
The past two weeks have been incredibly busy, festive, and full of wonderful moments across the school. From celebrations and performances to reflection and togetherness, it has been a joyful run-up to Christmas.
We kicked off the fortnight with our annual Sweet and Bottle Line-Up in the hall, brilliantly organised by our FOPS team. Each year group worked hard to create the longest possible line, with Year 6 proudly taking the win this year! All sweets and bottles collected will now be used as prizes at our upcoming Christmas Bazaar. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported this much-loved event.
On Thursday 4th December, we were treated to a delightful Christmas music concert that showcased the incredible talent across our school. We enjoyed performances from drummers, pianists, violinists, guitarists, and singers, with a fantastic opening from our school band performing Candle in the Window. A special mention goes to Viyona, Myra and Darissa, whose beautiful rendition of The Snowman was a real highlight. Parents were delighted to see the confidence and musical ability of our pupils. A big thank you to Dr Bunce and our Peripatetic teachers for always inspiring our children.
On Friday 5th December, we began the day with a thoughtful and engaging assembly led by our Faith Ambassadors, focusing on the Advent wreath and Christmas traditions from around the world. The children spoke confidently and respectfully, making it a meaningful start to the day. A big thank you to Mrs Hupalo for supporting the Faith Ambassadors in delivering such a lovely assembly.
That afternoon, excitement levels were high as the whole school visited Theatre Royal Windsor to watch Cinderella. The performance was enjoyed by everyone, with plenty of laughter throughout, and our children enthusiastically joined in with the audience participation, including dancing, singing, and many cries of “He’s behind you!”. There were audible gasps of awe as Cinderella’s carriage flew high above the audience, creating a truly magical moment for the children. The day ended with an impromptu carol concert, which delighted the theatre staff.
We began this week with a Christmas Pyjama and Film Wellbeing Day. Children arrived in festive pyjamas or Christmas outfits, bringing blankets and enjoying hot chocolate whilst watching a Christmas film in the afternoon. Throughout the day, learning continued as normal, with English, Maths, and other lessons all given a festive twist.
On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to receive a visit from some very special reindeer. While a few children were disappointed they could not see them flying, our knowledgeable handler explained that this only happens on one very special night each year. The handler shared lots of fascinating information about reindeer, and the children listened with great interest, learning all about their care, habits, and life in the winter months. The visit was a memorable and educational experience, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Wednesday, saw our much-anticipated Christmas Bazaar. The children loved having the independence of spending their own money, playing games, and choosing prizes. The raffle at the end was a particular highlight. A huge thank you to the FOPS team for organising such a successful and enjoyable event.
On Thursday, we enjoyed Christmas Jumper Day alongside our festive Christmas lunch. A very special visitor made an appearance at the EYFS and KS1 Christmas party, bringing lots of excitement and smiles. Celebrations continued with a whole-school disco in the hall, where energy levels were high and some very questionable (but enthusiastic!) dance moves were on display.
We ended the week with a beautiful Carol Service held in the Chapel at St Bernard’s Grammar School. We were delighted to be joined by Father Tony and Ros Nockles, our Chair of Governors. Every year group led us confidently in a carol as part of their thoughtful adaptation of the Nine Lessons of Christmas. We were also treated to our very own adult choir, consisting of Mrs Kimberley, Mrs Whittaker, Mrs Wilson and Mrs Nockles, who provided the descant during the carol, adding an extra layer of richness and warmth to the service. A special mention goes to Reece in Year 5, who performed a wonderful solo during Once in Royal David’s City. A particularly special moment came from our EYFS children, who sang and signed Away in a Manger beautifully. In the midst of a very busy and exciting Christmas season, the service felt calm, peaceful, and reflective. A moment of stillness that was appreciated by everyone present.
