Newsletter - 22nd January 2021

Dear Parents,

This morning's assembly focused on the importance of looking on the bright side of life. It is very easy, especially in difficult times, to see the glass as half empty, but if we choose to stay positive and see the glass as half full, it can improve our sense of happiness. I'm delighted to say that at St Bernard's Prep I'm surrounded by people who see the glass as half full, including our Head Girl, Ria.

Ria has shared with us some of her feedback on the teaching she is experiencing and it's wonderful to hear her positivity, "Despite the situation we are in, our lessons have continued to be fun and educational. In maths, we have learnt about a variety of topics including statistics and ratio. We work as we would in school and collaborate with our peers. Our lessons have been informative and interesting, but also enjoyable as well. We are very lucky to be part of such an amazing school and have such brilliant teachers!"

School Trip

This week our Year 1s went on their first virtual school trip. They sang songs on their virtual coach and took snacks and animal toys with them. They visited various zoos via live webcams and were able to see a variety of animals.  Sorting the animals into groups was a lovely introduction to their science topic. 

The Big Garden Birdwatch

The whole school is taking part in this year's Big Garden Birdwatch, which is initiated by the RSPB. To take part you just need to spend one hour between 29th-31st January observing and making a note of the birds that visit your garden. If you don't have a garden you can do it from your balcony or window.  Year 4 have been designing bird feeders to attract the birds to their garden and have produced some beautiful sketches of birds. 

The Arrival

Yr 6 have been studying The Arrival by Shaun Tan. This silent graphic novel is the story of every migrant, every refugee, every displaced person, and a tribute to all those who have made the journey.

The children have considered what drives so many to leave everything behind and journey alone to a mysterious country, a place without family or friends, where everything is nameless and the future is unknown. They have written emotive diary entries highlighting their ability to empathise with the little girl who has been left behind. Mrs Whittaker and Mrs Verma were simply blown away with the quality of writing and are extremely proud of all the children.

Every newsletter, I am planning to recommend you a book. I have decided to start with Year 6.  This book is called '' The Day I was Erased'' by an author some of you may be familiar with - Lisa Thompson. It is a humorous book and full of events that I think many of you will be able to enjoy. It is definitely my favourite book that I have read, and it's a 5 star rating from me! Try read it and see what you think of it and maybe try and tell me what you think of it.

Thunk Of The Day - Is it good to talk ?

Devam Year 5 -  "Yes, to express how you are feeling - and even those who can't talk, God will know what you are saying in your heart."

Our Pre Early Years and Early Years 1  children have been learning about materials via the story of The Three Little Pigs.

Hard work continues apace, at school and at home with our remote pupils, and it is wonderful to share that with all of you. A special mention for Jagat in Year 5 for a wonderful piece of work on Charities for RE.  Please do send in any videos and photos of the children at work and at play that you would like to share with us and we can put them on the school website or social media.
