Newsletter - Friday 4th February 2022

Dear Parents,

I'm not going to beat around the bush, this week I've been on cloud nine. The children have embraced the idiom challenge and really gone the extra mile. Shoehorning an idiom into a conversation is easier said than done, and some children thought they might land themselves in hot water by asking to spend a penny. I think some teachers thought I'd lost my marbles when I set this challenge, or bitten off more than I can chew, but it has been a snowball effect as the week has gone on, and the children have proved that they really know their onions!

Year of the Tiger

Early Years have been learning about Chinese New Year this week. They have sampled Chinese food, made lanterns, written their name in Chinese characters and taken part in a dragon dance!

Marmalade sandwiches

Prep (Yr 1) having been following in Paddington Bear's footsteps and his love of marmalade sandwiches, by learning to write their own set of instructions on how to make that perfect sandwich.

Spotlight On Success

Congratulations to Saffron in Prep (Yr 1) who has shown great enthusiasm for the idioms challenge. Saffron has used a number of idioms, in context with different members of staff throughout the week. She also presented Mrs Verma with a written explanation for the idioms included in last week's newsletter. Well done Saffron. We think you're the cat's pyjamas!

Celebrating Success

Well done to Hafsah in Transition (Yr 4) who has recently passed her level 3 swimming exam and was awarded Tiska Karate's best student trophy.

Shrey in Upper Prep (Yr 2) has been awarded student of the month in his Karate. Well done.

Congratulations also to Zaina in Lower Trans (Yr 3). Zaina has made tremendous improvements in French over the past months.  Brilliant work Zaina, your efforts have paid off and what a great accent!

National Story Telling Week

To celebrate National Story Telling Week, we are posting, chapter by chapter, a story written and read by Tulsi in Transition (Yr 4). Tusli is an avid reader and a prolific writer, and we're delighted that she was happy to share a story she wrote herself for her own pleasure.  We hope you enjoy The Five-Star Hotel.

On the decks

Transition (Yr 4) have been on the decks importing songs and learning how to use computer software to mix music!

Stop The Press!

Our budding newspaper reporters in Lower Trans (Yr 3) have been learning about the key features of a newspaper report. They wrote newspaper reports based on their class novel, The Wild Way Home.

The children devised their own headlines and structured their reports with the ‘lead’, the first paragraph, used to hook in the reader. They wrote the main body of the report, the tail, complete with a rhetorical question, and included their byline.

In Maths the children have been data handling. We collected data on our favourite fruits, our birthdays and our favourite seasons. We used this information to create tally charts, frequency tables, pictograms and bar charts. Did you know the favourite fruit in Lower Trans is an orange? Can you guess which was the favourite season?

Young Scientists

Remove (Yr 6) have been investigating the impact of physical activity on heart rate in science, and writing up their results.

Sports News

Netball

On Wednesday our Under 11A and B Netball teams travelled to Great Missenden to play against Gateway School. Our girls put up a phenomenal performance and won all three of their matches. Well done to all the players and a special mention to Annaya, Sara and Okuse for being nominated for MVP’s in their respective teams.

We would also like to wish our Under 10s the best of luck today as we welcome St Benedict’s for their first fixture of the season. All the best girls.

Football

We have had a wonderful week of football fixtures vs Thorpe House School. We've seen some fantastic goals and all-round great play on the pitches. Both our Under 9A and B Teams drew their matches 1-1 and 0-0 respectively, with our Under 11A’s winning 3-2 and our Under 11B’s losing 1-5. Well done to all the players involved and congratulations to Kishin, Josh, Daniel and Nayan for all being nominated as MVP’s for their teams.

We would also like to wish our Under 10s the best of luck today when they travel to Gerard’s Cross to take on Thorpe House School. All the best boys!

Mrs Verma's Big Ideas for Curious Minds

As a school we love to stretch and challenge our children, to enrich their education beyond the curriculum. Every week I will be sharing with you some discussion topics, new vocabulary, Maths riddles and book recommendations, that will infect our children with a love of learning. These will all be posted in the Parent Portal section of our website as well.

Word of the week - Punctilious (adjective)

Punctilious - Showing great attention to detail

The squire was punctilious in his care for his master's armour and weapons for he knew that this was a matter of life and death.

In The News This Week - Storm Malik

Storm Malik has been wreaking havoc in northern England and Scotland with winds of  up to 100 miles an hour. There is an upside though, the UK’s wind farms have generated a record amount of renewable electricity thanks to the storm. An all-time high of more than 19,500 megawatts – or more than half the UK’s electricity – according to data from National Grid.

National Grid’s electricity system operator said that although it recognised the new milestone towards the UK’s ‘net zero’ carbon future, it was “also thinking of those affected by Storm Malik”.

Calling All Book Worms - Inspiring Icons

This week I am recommending the 40 Inspiring Icons series. There are a number of books in the series, from footballers and musicians, to scientists and peacekeepers. Each book celebrates 40 icons in their field and gives a potted history of their achievements and significant contributions.  A great series to share with younger children, or for older children to read themselves.

Yours sincerely,
