Newsletter - Friday 23rd September 2022

Dear Parents,

There has been a buzz around school this week as the children, now settled into their lessons, have become inspired and enthused by the topics covered in class. There has been a STEAM focus, with a brilliant visit from 3Discovery, who introduced our children to so many exciting applications of computing.  Remove (Year 6) rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in to some practical Science, Early Years have been practising their listening skills in Maths, Trans (Year 4) have been learning about the digestive tract and Upper Trans (Year 5) about lifecycles.  We have also been busy in PE and Games, our lunchtime and after school clubs, and of course, making the most of break times!

Dissection in Science

Remove (Year 6) have been learning about the anatomy of the heart and this week they were given the opportunity to dissect a lamb's heart. A lamb's heart is very similar to human heart, and the children enjoyed looking at the different chambers and blood vessels, learning the vocabulary and embedding their learning with hands-on experience. It's a lesson they will never forget!

In Design and Technology Upper Trans have been learning to sew, in preparation for making their own puppet.  The children worked with great dexterity and displayed some beautiful needlework.

3 Discovery - Computing Workshops

Mrs Rafferty, our Computer Specialist, organised a fantastic day of computing workshops run by 3 Discovery. These experiences are invaluable for our children. They ignite enthusiasm, harness new skills and demonstrate how the skills we teach them can be used in real-life scenarios.

Early Years 2 (Reception) were working on digital posters about themselves. Lower Trans (Year 3) were creating their own animation with Lego and Remove (Year 6) learnt the art of Vlogging.

Dates and Reminders

Thursday 29th September 5:30pm -7pm - Open Evening

Friday 30th September 9:30am-11am - Open Morning

Please sign the user agreement form for computing and send it back to school and photo permission form for all new starters.

KS2 PE and Games Equipment

This is just a polite reminder that all children in Years 3 to 6 must have mouthguards, shin-pads and football/rugby boots at school on the days that they have PE and Games lessons. It is vitally important they bring these items to school in order for them to be able to participate fully in the curriculum.

News Club

We had some budding journalists gather for our first ever News Club this week. We have already started planning for a St Bernard's Prep TV channel and newspaper. The children have had some wonderful ideas and are already getting to work on their own news stories. There are great things to come - watch this space!

U10 Hockey vs Gayhurst

Last Friday our Under 10A and B Hockey teams travelled to Gerrards Cross to play in their first fixtures of the year. Considering our girls had very little time to prepare, they certainly did not disappoint on the pitch. Although we narrowly lost both matches, our players grew stronger throughout the afternoon and put up remarkable performances especially in the second halves of each of their games. A special well done to both Anaira and Shyla who received the “Green Laces” awards for being nominated as their respective teams’ MVPs.

Sports Star of The Week

This week’s Sports Star is Pranay in Upper Prep. Last Sunday, Pranay, along with a few other St Bernard’s Prep children attended the Slough RFC open club session and produced a great effort on the rugby pitch.  He was awarded with Quilter Kids Green Laces for his outstanding work in the morning.  Well done and keep up the good work Pranay!

Open Day Events

Next week we are hosting two Open Day events - one after school on Thursday 29th September, and one on the morning of Friday 30th September. Please do recommend us to friends and family.

Please could I also ask that you take a minute or two to go online and review us on Google. It helps to inform prospective parents - you are our greatest advert! Thank you.

Mrs Verma's Big Ideas for Curious Minds

As a school we love to stretch and challenge our children, to enrich their education beyond the curriculum. Every week I will be sharing with you some discussion topics, new vocabulary, Maths riddles and book recommendations, that will infect our children with a love of learning. These will all be posted in the Parent Portal section of our website as well.

Word of the week: hypothesis (noun)

A proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.

"Their hypothesis is that watching excessive amounts of television reduces a person's ability to concentrate."
