Dear Parents,

We ushered autumn in this week, with the cooler weather and today's Harvest Festival Assembly, led by Upper Trans Y (Year 5). The Assembly taught us about the meaning of the word harvest, and how if we invest now; in our environment, each other and ourselves, we will be able to harvest the results. The children presented beautifully, and we were delighted that so many Upper Trans Y parents were able to join us.

This week we hosted a couple of Open Day events for prospective parents. A huge thank you to all the children who stayed on after school to help. I always swell with pride when our visitors tell me what polite, articulate and well-mannered children we have at St Bernard's Prep.

Responsibilities

At St Bernard's Prep we believe in pupil voice. We feel it is important that our children play an active role in school life and act as the school's ambassadors.  Every year we announce areas of responsibility for our Remove children (Year 6). I know they are going to be wonderful role models for our younger children and excellent representation for the school.

Gabriel's Angels

A number of years ago, I introduced the award Gabriel's Angels. Inspired by one of our pupils, Gabriel, who embodied all the qualities that we aspire to for St Bernard's Prep Children - Resilience, Relationships, Risk-Taker, Resourcefulness and Responsibility. Today we re-introduced this award, which had been sidelined due to Covid. I'm delighted to have it back and enjoyed congratulating children from each year group on their hard work, attitude to learning and general demeanour. Well done!

Sports Star of The Week.

This week’s Sports Star is Himani in Upper Trans Y for her outstanding efforts in cricket. Recently, Himani has been selected to represent the Middlesex Under 11 girls squad. This is a wonder achievement and we wish Himani all the best for the season ahead.  Well done Himani!

Rugby vs Dair House

This week our Under 11 Rugby teams travelled to Dair House for the first rugby fixtures of the season. Despite narrowly losing both games, our teams produced wonderful open play overall,  which resulted in some fantastic tries being scored. Our A team went down 9-11. While our B team fell short by just one try to end the score at 10-11. Mikail, Aarav, Aryaman, Aneni, Suraj, Arjan and Suhas all crossed the line for tries for their respective teams. A special well done to both Mylan and Mahaayana for being nominated as the players of matches in each of their games.

Poetry Week

We have been celebrating Poetry Week at St Bernard's Prep this week with a whole school study of 'The Lost Words' by Robert Macfarlene and Jackie Morris. This is a beautiful book filled with poems and illustrations based on the words which have vanished from the language of children. Each year group has analysed a different poem and created their own poems to bring these words back to life. It has been a fantastic week, and we are very proud of what the children have produced! We will share these with you next week.

Headteacher's Challenge

We had a fantastic response to last term's Headteacher's Challenge. The entries were of a great standard - we loved reading about the people that inspire you. Our overall winner was Dea from Transition (Year 4), who wrote a beautiful piece on Mahatma Ghandi. Well done Dea!

Mrs Verma's Big Ideas for Curious Minds

As a school we love to stretch and challenge our children, to enrich their education beyond the curriculum. Every week I will be sharing with you some discussion topics, new vocabulary, Maths riddles and book recommendations, that will infect our children with a love of learning.

Word of the week: perilous (adj)

Full of danger or risk

"You should avoid driving during the snowstorm because the icy roads are perilous."
