Dear Parents,

Welcome  to the Summer Term! It was lovely to see the children bounding through the school gates, full of energy and enthusiasm for the term ahead.
Some of our children have had a busy Easter break and have been achieving in various areas. I am proud to announce that some children in Lower Trans K have achieved a variety of accolades:

Vaani and Amelia  -  in Early Years 1 have been working hard on their swimming and have achieved their Level 1 certificate.  Well done girls!

Anya - plays for Slough Hockey Club and was awarded a hockey trophy and medal for being 'Best Player of the Season' - well done Anya!

Veeran - played for Europaths, and he received a football trophy and 2 medals for coming 3rd out of 82 teams in Brussels whilst competing in a European tournament - well done Veeran!

Mela -  achieved distinction in her pre-primary ballet examination - well done Mela!

Whilst some children have been busy with various extra-curricular activities; others have spent time with family and friends and being of service to others. Zayna is Trans (Y4) told me how she spent the holidays doing some charitable work for Islamic Relief - well done Zayna!

Time for a cuppa...

In Upper Prep (Y2) the Geography topic for this half-term is ‘India’ and their class reader ‘Cloud Tea Monkeys' inspired the teachers to design an immersive tea tasting experience, accompanied by some Rich Tea biscuits! They really enjoyed the experience and it was fantastic to see the children testing their palates. We were delighted to see so many children came to school in traditional costumes or wearing green, orange or white clothes – the colours of the Indian flag.

Early Years and Vaisakhi Celebrations

On Wednesday, we welcomed back our Early Years children and some new friends who have joined us in Pre-Early Years: Anaika, Joven, Leonardo, Riaan and Zahi. We are thrilled to see them settling in so quickly.

Early Years celebrated Vaisakhi on Thursday. Our day was filled with crafts, music and lots of dancing. The children were treated to a visit from Meva's Mummy and Daddy. They shared their celebrations with us and brought in some Sikh artefacts for the children to see. Thank you to Himmat's Mummy for arranging Prashad from the local Gurdwara, which we enjoyed at the end of the assembly. We would also like to thank all the parents, who prepared food and contributed to a wonderful day.

Today, the week ended with our Little St B's session on minibeasts. We were delighted to welcome siblings and some new families too. Don't forget to follow our Instagram @earlyyearsatstbernardsprep for more information and upcoming sessions.

Eye of the Storm

Lower Trans have already launched themselves into the 'Eye of the Storm' this week - a short film about a mysterious man who flew his spaceship into the eye of the storm! It is a great visual stimulus and the children eagerly applied their VIPERS comprehension skills. The children will soon begin reading one of Michael Morpurgo's classic stories - The Butterfly Lion and I am looking forward to seeing them share their work with you all.

Month of Mary Liturgy

Next week, Lower Trans U will host a Liturgy to celebrate the month of Mary. Parents of LTU children are warmly invited to attend. As part of this celebration, the entire school will walk to the grotto with flowers, which will then be distributed to those in need within our local community. The Liturgy will commence at 11am.

Watch this space!

There’s so much in store for us this term, despite having two consecutive bank holidays!

The Upper Transition classes will be visiting the National Gallery and the new BBC Earth Experience exhibition next Tuesday 2nd May.

We’ll be celebrating the King’s Coronation with a picnic on Friday 5th May, which all families are invited to.

Meanwhile, the Remove children are diligently preparing for their SATS exams, which begin on Tuesday 8th May until Friday 12th May.

Mrs Whittaker, Madame Miller, Mr Cheesman and I will then be taking the children on a five-day residential trip to France leaving 15th May. The children are bursting at the seams with excitement, and I imagine we won’t be getting much sleep either!

Prep and Upper Prep children have started rehearsing for their summer production 'The Bee Musical' and there is a real buzz around school, as they prepare to dazzle us with their drama and singing skills!

On June 8th some of our children will be sitting their first LAMDA exams. I am so excited as LAMDA are QFQUAL regulated exams, which means they hold gravitas. They are valuable qualifications to have, as they are highly regarded by all secondary schools in both the state and independent sector and can also be referenced in their future UCAS applications too!

9th June - Sports Day at TVAC - more details to follow

15th & 16th June - Remove and Transition children will be performing their end of year production -  Shakespeare's The Tempest

28th June - Berkshire Maestros at the Hexagon Reading

30th June - Elocution Challenge

W/C 3rd July - EYFS Parents Evening - more details to follow

6th July - Remove (Y6) Prizegiving evening

11th July - Parents Evening (Y1-Y6)

12th July - Remove Leaver's Mass 11am

12th July  - Term ends 12 noon.

Mrs Verma's Big Ideas for Curious Minds

As a school we love to stretch and challenge our children, to enrich their education beyond the curriculum. Every week I will be sharing with you some discussion topics, new vocabulary, Maths riddles and book recommendations, that will infect our children with a love of learning.

Word of the week

Loquacious (adjective) - given to fluent excessive talk

synonym: garrulous GARRULOUS

"With a wonderful memory for detail, this talkative woman—who my father said never forgets anything—became truly loquacious."

"To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge."

- Confucious

I hope you all enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend and I look forward to welcoming all the children next week for another jam-packed week!
