Dear Parents,

Spring has arrived! The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and we are all feeling the positive vibes here at St Bernard's Preparatory School. It is the perfect time to shake off the winter blues and embrace the freshness of spring.

Join me in welcoming the season of growth, change, and new beginnings. Our children are bubbling with energy and enthusiasm, ready to make the most of the brighter days ahead.

I would like to congratulate our amazing U11 Netball team for their fantastic effort at the IAPS Netball Tournament hosted by Wellington College this week. Their hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship were truly commendable.

We are incredibly proud of our players representing our school with such determination and grace. The experience gained from participating in such a competitive event is invaluable, and we are confident the team will continue to grow and achieve even greater things in the future.

Thank you to all the parents who joined us for our Lent reflection this morning, it was such a wonderful and calm way to start the day.

Assembly Upper Prep - St David's Day

Today Upper Prep delivered a spectacular assembly in celebration of St David's Day! The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as daffodils filled the room. The children showcased their hard work in learning traditional Welsh songs and dance moves. Miss Bal and Miss Adams were beaming with pride at the incredible effort put in by all the children. A huge well done to everyone involved!

Micro Dukes

Our Micro Dukes were thrilled to have triumphed over their second challenge 'exercise'! They dedicated numerous hours to scooting, cycling, and skateboarding, showing admirable perseverance and determination to reach their individual goals.

Mini Dukes

Our Mini-Dukes have also conquered their second challenge with Exercise too! However, they set out on a 2-hour walk, carrying essential items in their backpack, and they absolutely smashed it! From Slough to Windsor and laps around Black Park, they've shown incredible resilience and pure determination to achieve their goal.

School Council Tuck Shop

We are thrilled to announce that The School Council's first tuck shop was a resounding success last Friday afternoon! Not only was it a hit with the children, but it also managed to raise an amazing £40 towards FOPs outdoor classroom.

The School Council worked incredibly hard to make this happen, and we could not be prouder of their dedication and effort. From organising the tasty treats to handling the sales with a smile, they truly shone as leaders in our school community.

We are so grateful to everyone who supported the tuck shop and contributed to this fantastic fundraising initiative. Every pound raised gets us closer to creating an amazing outdoor learning space for all our children to enjoy.

The School Council will be holding their next tuck shop on the 15th March 2024.

Achievements

Congratulations to Ciarán (Year 3) for participating in an interclub Muay Thai boxing competition last weekend, where he proudly represented his club in a regional event and his exceptional performance earned him a medal.

Archie (Yr 5) and Kishin (Yr 6) were lucky enough to be selected to attend a trip to Milan with their football club. They had training sessions, played against a local team and even had the chance to watch Inter Milan play against Atlanta. This was a great cultural experience and I am sure they enjoyed taste testing a large array of pasta and pizza! Ciao Bella!

Woodwind Instruments

There are currently still a few places left for children to take up regular Woodwind (Clarinet, Flute and Saxophone) lessons in school.

Learning a woodwind instrument is a great social and fun way to learn to play music, as these instruments give children the opportunity to play in groups with other like-minded musicians whilst still encouraging all the other life skills that learning a musical instrument gives us (motor and co-ordination skills, listening skills, reading skills, counting skills, multi tasking skills, music appreciation skills ....), the list is endless!

Our woodwind teacher, Sue Dunsdon, has many years of teaching experience and has had a 100% exam pass rate at St Bernard's Prep, with her students often gaining at least Grade 3 ABRSM before leaving primary school.  Sue was initially a classically trained musician but also has a degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She is a proficient 'instrument doubler', performing on Clarinet, Flute and Saxophone in local jazz Big Bands and Pit Orchestras for musical shows, such as 42nd Street, Oliver, Little Mermaid, Sister Act, The Sound of Music, Grease, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Footloose, to name but a few.

If you are keen for your child to take up this amazing opportunity to learn one of these instruments, please fill in the form in the Parent Portal and return it to reception.  Places will be taken on a 'first come, first served' basis, so please don't leave it too long before applying as your child may miss out.  Your child may well be the next Benny Goodman, James Galway or Charlie Parker of today!

Under 11 Football vs Langley Hall

Last Monday, St Bernard's Under 11A team faced Langley Hall, on the muddy and boggy pitches for their rescheduled match. St Bernard's displayed an excellent performance in the first half, creating remarkable opportunities that unfortunately went unconverted. Despite being 2-0 down at half-time, due to Langley Hall's breakaway goals, St Bernard's remained determined. They fought back in the second half, narrowing the score twice against their tough opponents, with the final score being 5-3 to Langley Hall. Congratulations to all the players for their outstanding performance, and special recognition to Eesah, who was named the team's MVP.

Netball

Under 11 IAPS Netball Tournament:

On Wednesday the 28th of February, our Under 11A Netball team travelled to Wellington College in Crowthorne to participate in the annual IAPS Tournament. This distinguished event sees the best netball teams from all over Southern England taking part. Our girls had a wonderful experience using the fantastic facilities that Wellington College has to offer, and although we did not progress to the next round, our girls played outstanding in all 4 of the matches they featured in, one of which was against the number 1 ranked team of the Tournament. Huge congratulations to all the girls for representing our school at this prestigious event.

Wishing all our children and their families a wonderful first weekend of spring. To add to the joy, it is Wellbeing Weekend, so no homework is assigned. Embrace this opportunity to relish the outdoors, weather permitting – be it a peaceful stroll in the park, a picnic with loved ones, or just unwinding in your garden. Seize the moment as spring begins to unfold.

Keep in mind that a bit of fresh air and sunshine can work wonders for your well-being. Let's welcome spring with all its optimism and happiness!

I will leave you with a quote that bought a smile to my face and felt like it was written for me.
