Dear Parents,

Happy Guardian Angels Day!

As part of our cherished tradition, we treated all the children to a delightful iced bun and an apple, along with an extended break time. Our children have also thoroughly enjoyed a range of wellbeing activities, fostering a positive atmosphere for everyone.

On Wednesday, Upper Prep captivated us with a vibrant and informative liturgy linked to Black History Month and themed "Unity in Diversity." They led the entire school on an engaging biblical journey. They sang beautifully and reminded us how important it is to make everyone feel included.

I would like to say a big thank you to the parents who joined us for our "Chat, Cheese and Cheers" evening on Thursday. It was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy friendly conversations and sip on something delightful. I certainly hope you enjoyed the occasion too.

This morning, our Year 6 children entertained us with the annual Guardian Angels performance, where they took on the roles of our esteemed staff. What a delight it was to witness their creativity! We were treated to an impressive rendition of Mr. B, and I must say, there was a particularly snappy dresser who bore a striking resemblance to Dr. Bunce. Jiya’s portrayal of Mrs. Verma was equally commendable, but the true highlight came when Mrs. Bascardi stepped in beautifully to cover for her unwell stand-in. It’s always heart-warming to see how we all pull together during these special moments!

Harvest Collection

Today, we received a letter from Iver Heath Library that truly warmed our hearts. In the spirit of giving back during our collections for Harvest Festival, we gathered a delightful assortment of items for those in need. Alongside our donation to the Slough Food Bank, we also contributed to Iver Heath Library to spread joy throughout our community. The thank-you letter we received serves as a beautiful reminder of the significance of being Guardian Angels for one another, especially on this special day dedicated to kindness and community spirit. Every small gesture of generosity strengthens the connections that hold our community together!

 

Science Fair

We are also holding our first St Bernard’s Prep School science fair on Thursday 14^th of November 2024. The children will be encouraged to complete a science-based task at home focused on any area of science that interests them. They will have a period of about 5 weeks (including half term) to complete their project.

They could research an area of interest and display their findings on a poster board; they might choose to complete an experiment (e.g. What happens to my heart rate when I play video games?) and show their investigation write up on their poster board; they might choose to create a model with an explanation, including some history of the theory on their poster board (e.g. A model of an atom).

All of these projects will then be displayed together and parents will be invited in to attend the showcase. There will be prizes and awards for 1st, 2^nd and 3^rd place for KS1 and for KS2.

Music

Exciting news from the music department – we now have an official school band! Comprising of members from the upper school, the band has already performed at three Liturgies and Assemblies. We gather every Thursday to rehearse, playing a mix of popular songs and enhancing school singing by accompanying some hymns. We are currently looking for a new drum kit and wondered if anyone might have an old one tucked away in their loft that they no longer use. If you do and would like to donate it to the department, please reach out to Dr. Bunce via office@stbernardsprep.org.

Under 10 + Under 11 Football vs Thorpe House

Last Friday, we travelled to Thorpe house with 3 football teams, each with a mixture of both Year 5 and 6 boys. All three matches were played in great spirit and were closely contested. We saw fantastic all round skill throughout the afternoon with plenty of tackles being made and some outstanding goals being scored. Our A’s lost 3-5, our B’s won 7-6 and our Cs lost 4-5. Well done to all the players and a special shout out to Reyaansh P, Akaal and Rohan  for being nominated as MVPs for their respective teams.

Under 9 Rugby vs St John’s Beaumont

On Tuesday, our Under 9 Bears and Bulls Rugby teams travelled to St John’s Beaumont in Old Windsor. In muddy conditions, both of our teams played 2 matches each against a mixture of their under 8s and under 9s. Our boys put up a fantastic display and as the afternoon progressed we were playing into more space and our passing game came on very nicely, resulting in some awesome tries.  Our Bulls lost their first match 3-5, and won their second match 7-4. Our  Bears lost their first match 3-5, and with a strong performance in their second match they won 3-1.   Well done to all the players and a special well done to Ryan and Maurice for being nominated as their respective teams’ MVPs.

Under 11 Hockey vs Gayhurst

On Wednesday, our Under 11A and B Hockey teams travelled to Gerrard’s Cross to play against Gayhurst School. Our boys and girls all showed plenty of fighting spirit on the pitch, making the games very exciting.  Our A team started off slowly and conceded a few goals, but improved immensely in the second half to ensure our opponents stayed well clear from the goals. Although we lost the match, it was a tremendous effort in the latter part of the game. Our B team played remarkably and were able to secure a 1-0 win over their opponents. This was largely due to an outstanding display of excellent teamwork.

Both Jiya and Saacha  were nominated as the “Quilter Kids” players of the matches  for their respective teams.
