Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to all of our families after the Easter break. It has been wonderful to see everyone return so full of energy. We have certainly hit the ground running.

Last week, Year 3 stepped back in time and thoroughly enjoyed their Roman Day. The children took part in a range of exciting activities, learning about life in Roman Britain and even creating their own Roman coins. It was a fantastic hands-on way to bring history to life.

Our Upper Transition pupils have had an incredible time on their residential trip to Penshurst Place on a Bushcraft adventure. They have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and resilience. Activities have included den building, learning how to safely use a knife to create a wooden peg, and using rope to make bracelets. The children have also taken part in a wide range of outdoor games and wilderness activities, and watched a fascinating demonstration on how to gut and cook a salmon. They explored important skills such as concealment and camouflage, took part in wilderness first aid, and enjoyed a memorable hike to visit the oldest tree in England, the Sydney Oak. Alongside this, they learnt about the history of Penshurst, including links to Henry VIII. Evenings have been just as special, filled with songs, games, and a campfire with hot chocolate.

Today, Year 6 led us beautifully in our May Procession. We gathered as a school community to honour Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The children processed prayerfully to our grotto, stopping along the way to reflect on important moments in Mary’s life and to pray together. Through these reflections, we were reminded of Mary’s faith, her courage, and her example of kindness and trust in God. As we placed flowers at the grotto, we gave thanks and asked Mary to guide our school, our families, and our world.

It has been a joyful and busy start to the term, and we are looking forward to all that lies ahead.

The Primary Maths Challenge Bonus Round 2026 Results Are In!

In November 2025, more than 61,000 pupils took part in the PMC Challenge, demonstrating impressive mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills. 3,100 pupils who scored 21 marks or higher were invited to participate in the Bonus Round, held in February 2026.

Once again, the results at St Bernard’s Prep have been exceptional. From the submissions returned to the Maths Association, an incredible 85 pupils achieved full marks, one of whom is our very own Reyaansh Paul! As well as this, the children have achieved an impressive gold award, 5 silver awards and 4 bronze awards— an amazing achievement and a testament to the mathematical talent and dedication our children have here at St Bs.

As well as this, the children who are 9 years old and above took part in the Primary Kangaroo – this was piloted by us and other schools last year. This gave the children a chance to take part in another challenge, helping their curiosity and mathematical thinking to grow. We are always proud to celebrate our children!

Science Crest Award

As part of the school’s commitment to inspiring curiosity and a love of learning in Science, Upper Prep children have been enthusiastically working towards their CREST Award through a range of fun, hands-on investigations. The children have been busy thinking and working like real scientists; asking questions, making predictions, carrying out tests and reflecting on what they discover. One of the highlights so far has been the ‘Useless Umbrella’ challenge, where children explored a variety of materials to find out which would best keep the rain out. There was great excitement as they tested each material with water, observing closely to see which were waterproof and which were absorbent. Through this, children developed key scientific skills such as careful observation, comparing results and explaining their ideas using scientific vocabulary, all while working collaboratively and sharing their thinking. The children are now looking forward to the next stage, where they will put their learning into action by designing and creating their very own improved umbrellas, as well as learning about Sir David Attenborough as he celebrates his 100th birthday on Monday.

As we come to the end of this week, we would like to wish all of our families a happy and restful Bank Holiday weekend. As it is Wellbeing Weekend, there will be no homework set, and we hope this allows everyone to enjoy some valuable time together.

We also look forward to another exciting week ahead, with our Transition pupils heading off on their residential trip to Longridge.
