Newsletter 4th December 2020

Dear Parents,

With our beautiful tree up and decorated and the first candle on the advent wreath lit, we're all feeling very festive at St Bernard's Prep. There is lots of singing going on throughout the school with our coordinated carol concert. Each year group is preparing a piece in their bubbles, and it is wonderful to hear the rehearsals. I trust the children are all enjoying their advent calendars, paid for by FOPS, thank you.

Christingle

This year's Christingle celebration was led by the Year 3s, and they blew us away with their singing. All the children enjoyed decorating their Christingle oranges and it was lovely to come together over video for a very uplifting liturgy. If you'd like to have a listen to the Year 3s singing there is a short sample on our social media channels - Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Gift of reading

Morrisons in Eastbourne, in conjunction with Gardners Books Ltd, have donated two large boxes of books to the school. The books have been distributed to all year group class libraries and some of the books have also gone to the secondary school. The companies are very happy that they were able to give the gift of the joy of reading to children outside of their normal donation area . We would like to thank them for their generosity.

Reasons to be cheerful

Our Year 2s have had an incredible result with 100% passing their Phonics Screening Test. This result would be great news in normal times, but given that they achieved this during the pandemic through remote teaching is really exceptional. Well done to the children for all their hard work and a huge thank you to our teachers whose dedication and commitment to high standards make these results possible.

Give A Little Love

In support of our Headmaster's Challenge, the Director at John Lewis and Partners has sent the pupils of St Bernard's Prep a special message. Do take a look on Twitter, or in the News section of our website. We look forward to receiving the children's letters after the Christmas holidays. If you would like to share a video or photos of the children carrying out their act of kindness pleased to send them to sarah.oliver@stbernardsprep.org.

Dates for Diary:

This morning we watched a wonderful recording of the Early Years' Nativity play. In a time when many schools have cancelled their carol concerts, nativities and Christmas productions, we feel very lucky to have staff that have gone the extra mile to make sure our children - and parents - don't miss out.  Parents, you're in for a real treat!

Parking:

I'm afraid I have had more disappointing feedback on the parking and driving around the entrance of the school.  While I have no control on what happens outside the school gates, I have a duty to the safety of our pupils and wider school community. Please exercise caution and consideration during drop off and pick up.

Berkshire Maestros:

Years 1, 4 and 5 have been recording carols for a 12 hour concert coordinated by Berkshire Maestros. The concert, with both live and pre-recorded pieces, will be streamed on 11th December. www.berkshiremaestros.org.uk

Headmaster's Award goes to Evie Jagga this week, for a beautiful prayer she wrote and shared with her class. Well done Evie.

Yours sincerely,

Mr N Cheesman
