Newsletter Friday 25th June

Dear Parents,

We started the week off on a high by adding yet another prestigious award to our collection, with the CAFOD Live Simply Award. A great achievement which represents the values and the ethos that underpin our school. Well done to everyone involved. After a strong start, the rest of the week didn't disappoint with some brilliant athleticism on show in Sports Day, beautiful voices and acting in the Year 6 production and a dazzling radio interview on BBC Berkshire by our Year 3s.  If all these highlights are the icing, then the hard work and academic successes that continue every day, in every lesson, must be the cake. A great week everyone, I'm incredibly proud.

Live Simply

We were delighted to receive The Live Simply award by CAFOD, in recognition of our endeavour to live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with people in poverty. From care packages for the homeless, donations to the Baby Bank and visits to local care homes, to our Reflective Garden, moving away from single use plastic and walking to school, everyone has worked hard to achieve this award.  Children from each year group were interviewed, via Zoom, and spoke so eloquently and confidently about the work undertaken and about how we plan to continue to live simply. Congratulations to everyone involved and well done to Mrs Hupalo who has been the driving force.

Chess Champions

After an epic battle, which lasted over an hour and half, between our two finalists, both in Year 5, Sahas and Jayan, the game ended in stalemate. In a surprisingly speedy re-match Jayan launched an explosive attack and has emerged as the Champion 2021. Well done to everyone who took part.

Exhibition Match

An Exhibition Match between Sumant, Year 6 and a County Chess player, and Jayan our reigning champion, attracted a crowd of enthusiastic chess fans. In their first encounter the players were evenly matched, with some tricky positions to be recovered. Sumant's experience came to the fore, and he overcame Jayan.

Sports Day

Over the past two weeks all the children across the school took part in their annual Sports Days in collaboration with National School’s Sports Week.  All of our athletes from the youngest in our Nursery to the eldest in Year 6 all gave their utmost and produced some wonderful performances in the races they ran.

The winning House for each respective year group was as follows:

Prep – MARK

Upper Prep – LUKE

Lower Trans – MATTHEW

Trans – LUKE

Upper Trans – MARK

Remove – JOHN

The overall results were extremely close. In the end it was MARK who finished as the whole school champions with 394 points. Second was JOHN with 380, third was LUKE with 378 and fourth was MATTHEW with 377 points. This is by far the closest of Sports Day results we have had in many years!

Well done to all the children for their outstanding efforts!

Jungle Book

When so many schools have cancelled events, I'm delighted that we have been able to go ahead with the end of year production by Year 6 and share it with the parents. Opening night was a roaring success, and so for those of you with tickets for this evening's performance, you're in for a great night!

Year 3

Year 3 have much to celebrate this week with an articulate and informative podcast that was featured on BBC Berkshire! The children and Ms Underwood were interviewed about their Go Givers project. Listen now at https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p09kffxx fast forward to 1:34.  Today the Year 3s have taken part in a Virtual Roman Workshop, learning all about archaeological digs and having a Roman Feast!

Congratulations to Tilak who received a distinction in his Grade 2 Guitar exam. A great result Tilak, well done!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Mr N Cheesman
