Newsletter Friday 11th June

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a lovely half-term. It was made all the more enjoyable by the beautiful weather, which I'm glad to say has continued this week. We finished last half-term on a high with a very successful camping night for the Year 6 and lovely trip to London Zoo for the Year 1s. It's wonderful to introduce more of the school trips and activities as restrictions have eased and the weather improves. Today, looking out the window, I saw preparations for year group Sports Days in full force and rehearsals for drama productions going well. We look forward to sharing the highlights of Sports Day on the Parent Portal, and hope next year you'll all be able to attend in person.

Safety Week

This week every child from Year 1 to Year 6 participated in a workshop based on the British Red Cross First Aid Champions Programme. The children were taught what actions they should take in order to give basic first aid to adults and children. Skills taught included how to deal with bleeding, broken bones, choking, head injuries and asthma attacks. Our eldest children also learned how to deal with people who are unresponsive and breathing, and unresponsive and not breathing. Next week each child will be provided with a log in for the First Aid Champions website. If they complete the quizzes based on the skills they have learned, they will receive a First Aid Champions certificate. A letter will follow next week with further details.

Chess Tournament

There has been a great competitive spirit in the Chess Tournament this week in Years 4, 5 and 6. Congratulations to Arjun, Tilak and Aryaman in Year 4, Kabir and Vivek in Year 6 for progressing to the Quarter finals. We're looking forward to the results from the Year 5 play offs and wait excitedly for the next round.

RE Gold Award

St Bernard’s has once again challenged itself in entering into a review of RE across the whole school. This took the form of the ‘RE Quality Mark’, which was developed to celebrate good RE in education. We are delighted to share the news with you all that for the second time in 5 years St Bernard’s has been awarded a GOLD Quality Mark for RE. I would like to acknowledge the fabulous work of all the staff and especially all the children who made this happen. Well done one and all.

Science

Trans designed and made Switches to use in electrical circuits. The results were highly imaginative and very impressive. Well done Trans!

Big Bee Challenge

Eco Council are encouraging as many of you as possible to enter the BBC Radio 2 Big Bee Challenge.

It’s a fun and creative way to learn more about bees and other insects that help provide much of the food we eat, and are essential for a healthy environment.

If you are between the ages of 6 and 12, we want you to design a bright, buzzy garden that will attract bees and other pollinating insects. The winner’s design will be built by the RHS at an NHS Trust site which is used by children and young people with mental health needs. We would love you to bring in a hard copy of your entry so that is can be displayed on the Eco Council board.

The lucky winner will be invited to open the garden at an outside broadcast of The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on Friday 20 August 2021! You will meet loads of guests, receive a professional illustration of your garden design and go home with a box of goodies to help turn your own outside space into a wonderland for bees. Each shortlisted finalist will also receive an array of bee themed goodies. It's super simple to enter. Download the garden design entry form and paint, sketch or draw a gorgeous garden. We are delighted to have reintroduced after school clubs and sports this term, details of which can be found on the school website. However, as infection rates of Covid rise, particularly in our local area, I would like to thank you for remaining cautious and vigilant.
