Newsletter Friday 1st October

Dear Parents,

This week we enjoyed a Welcome Mass, said by Father Kevin in the school hall with the upper school in-person, and the lower school watching remotely in their classrooms. It was wonderful to be together for the first Mass we've had inside in almost two years.  In this morning's Assembly we announced the Responsibilities for Year 6 and Class Monitors for the rest of the school. Congratulations to all our new representatives.  In other news this week, our School Council met to discuss ways of making improvements around the school, Year 6 ran Mrs Whittaker's final mile of her 60-mile charity run and the children were really thoughtful during their quiet lunch, reflecting on CAFOD's Family Fast Day.

Spotlight on Success

I'd like this week's spotlight on success to celebrate Elle in Year 4, who stood up and recited a poem beautifully in assembly. It is really difficult to stand up and perform, without notice or preparation, in front of your peers and teachers, and Elle did it with wonderful expression and intonation. Do watch Elle reciting the poem on our social media channels.

This term's Headteacher's Award goes to Meraya in Year 4 for an individual entry and to Devam and Tilak for the group entry. Excellent compositions that we really enjoyed listening to.

Congratulations to Arjun in Year 5 who was the World Multiplication Tables Day champion in Mrs Skorupska's class.

Well done also to Hafsah, who has donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or other illnesses.

St Bernard's Preparatory Follow
"The dog ate my homework....no, really, the dog ate my homework." With more than 30 years of teaching experience, this is still a first for Mrs Bowen! Our lovely Year 6 child still managed to hand in her work by getting another copy of the homework, but brought in the evidence! What's the best excuse you've ever heard or used? #truestory #thedogatemyhomework #mathshomework #teachinglife #homeworkexcuses #stbernardsprep

Mrs Verma's Big Ideas for Curious Minds

As a school we love to stretch and challenge our children, to enrich their education beyond the curriculum. Every week I will be sharing with you some discussion topics, new vocabulary, Maths riddles and book recommendations, that will infect our children with a love of learning. These will all be posted in the Parent Portal section of our website as well.

Word of the week

Word of the week, this week, comes from my new book 100 Rare words to explore and enjoy.

Adumbral

Adjective: shadowy

At dusk, in the adumbral forest, a figure crept slowly towards the mouth of the cave.

From Latin adumbrates, meaning to cast a shadow.

The World This Week - Germany

Germany is in the news this week because the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the first mechanically printed books, sold at auction for £30,000.  The book was printed in 1493 in Germany on a movable-type printing press, which was invented in the 1440s by Johannes Gutenberg. Before the printing press was invented, books had to be written by hand!

What do you think would be different about the world today if the printing press was never invented?
