Dear Parents,

My first half-term as Acting Headteacher has been one to remember - for all the right reasons! It is wonderful to have all the children back in school, where they belong, and engaged in their learning. We have had beautiful liturgies, fascinating Assemblies, work to be proud of, sports achievements and a hilarious and brilliant Guardian Angels Day yesterday was the cherry on the cake.  We have also loved celebrating our children's achievements outside school, in their various musical and sporting endeavours. Well done this week to Eesha in Year 3 who came first in two of her swimming races at Windsor Swimming Club. Well done.

Thank you for continuing to support your children and the St Bernard's Prep community as a whole. I'm looking forward to the next half-term and all the excitement and successes that it will hold.

Early Years

Early years have had a wonderful first half term. We have been busy learning the school routine, making new friends and exploring our environments.

The Nursery children settled in quickly and have been busy learning different sounds, through the enjoyment of songs and nursery rhymes. In Maths we have been learning shapes, colours and patterns.

Reception have been learning about how the seasons change through different stories. We have developed our cookery skills making cookies, pizzas and toast. In literacy we have developed our sentence structure and now we all know the importance of a capital letter and a full stop. In maths we have been busy adding, subtracting and substituting as well as learning all about shapes, space and measuring.

Prep - Year 1

Year One have had an amazing term. Leon and Tessa have joined us and we have all been on a virtual train ride and enjoyed reading the book ‘The Train Ride’ by June Crebbin. They have been learning to use adjectives in their creative writing.

They have all explored their local environment and went for a walk in Slough. We looked at the different buildings.

The children have also been talking about their family and the Holy family. They discussed the importance of the love and care we show for each other in our families.

Upper Prep - Year 2

Upper Prep have had an incredible start to their academic year. Mrs Sugden and Mrs Kimberley were so very proud of the way they presented themselves at their Assembly. Everyone spoke clearly and had learned their words off by heart. Their narrative writing is making good progress, as is their sentence stacking, they have used onomatopoeias, alliteration, fronted adverbials and extended noun phrases. We have all enjoyed developing our historical skills as we studied primary and secondary evidence about the Great Fire of London. We cannot wait to get back and re-enact this with our model Tudor Houses!

Lower Trans - Year 3

We welcomed some new children into Year 3 in September - Rehmat, Sophia, Vihaan P, Vihaan J and Ria - who have made a great contribution to our classes and settled well. In Geography we have been studying the local area and in History we have been looking at the history of St Bernard's and Slough.

The children have been learning all about the human body in Science and what our body does for us, even carrying out an investigation on muscles and how they work. In English the children have enjoyed reading The Secret of Black Rock and have written their own versions beautifully. Our RE lessons have been focused on the 'big question', What makes a home? and we are learning about the Sikh Gurdwara and the Guru Granth Sahib in other world faiths.

Trans - Year 4

In September we welcomed Gayathri, Tulsi, Beant, Jayan, Haripriya and Nandini into Year 4. This half-term all children have worked hard when taking on the role of one of the main characters – Lucy, from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when writing a diary entry and a letter home.

In Science they enjoyed sharing their knowledge about teeth with Early Years. They have shown great teamwork when competing against other schools in hockey and rugby. All children have adjusted well and are now ready to rise and face the challenges that lay ahead of them; through team work, perseverance and with a developing growth mindset.

Upper Trans - Year 5

Year 5 have made some great contributions to school life this term and have welcomed Lara and Sara into their cohort. They have been stretched and challenged in Maths and English and have shown maturity in their roles as Faith Ambassadors and as part of the Eco Council, acting as great examples to our younger children.

Year 5 continue to work well in French and have enjoyed participating in  competitive sport, representing the school well.

Remove - Year 6

Our Year 6 children had the whole school in stitches with their fantastic Guardian Angels performance this week. It is lovely to watch the children, many of whom joined us when they were only two or three years old, grow through the school and become confident and accomplished young people we know today.

In Science, Year 6 have explored issues linked to climate change and tested “The Greenhouse Effect” in readiness for COP 26 when Global Leaders will discuss future actions. We continue to stretch and challenge our children in Maths and English and have enjoyed hearing their thoughts and views when discussing the depiction of religion in art.

IAPS Under 11 Football Tournament

On Thursday the 4th of November our Under 11A Football Team will be participating at the IAPS Football Tournament which will be held at Lambrook School in Winkfield Row, Bracknell. We would like to wish these boys the best of luck in representing St Bernard’s Prep at this prestigious event. All the best boys!

French

In French, the pupils in Early years have been learning the numbers, parts of the face and the body, the colours and we even talked about autumn and the colours. EY2 can now confidently count up to 15, recognise the numbers randomly and they can sing the numbers up to 20! They love watching “Peppa Pig” in French and earn French stickers.

Prep and Upper Prep are working on a book program called “La Jolie Ronde” where they learn about new characters and listen to stories whilst building up their vocabulary. They also sing and know their numbers up to 20. They even watched a film in French!

Lower trans has moved to a new book program “Bonjour la France”. They learnt the greetings, the numbers, the weather, transports, where they live, the compass points and some countries. They also learnt some Spanish during the celebration of the languages. They have been working very hard and I am very proud of their progress.

Trans and Upper Trans are working on the same program as last year “Bonjour la France”. They are more confident in working independently. They also learnt some Spanish during the celebration of the languages.

Remove are now working on “Studio1” book and are showing a great interest! They learnt the school subjects in French and they can now build sentences adding their opinions and some connectives. They put a lot of work into it. They are now learning the conjugation of the verbs of the first group. They also learnt some Spanish during the celebration of the languages and did “Our Father” in Italian! In November, after the assessment, we will be studying a film “Les Vacances du Petit Nicolas”.

Eco Council Poster Competition

In November, the UK will host the Climate Change Conference, in Glasgow. This is a real chance to persuade world leaders to promise to take climate action. We would like all children to design a poster to raise awareness of the conference and the 4 main goals of the conference.

There will be a prize for each year group and the Eco- Council would love to be flooded with entries. You can use the computer, recycled materials, felt tip pens or coloured pencils.

Four Main Aims of Cop 26

  1. Reduce emissions of coal and speed up use of renewable energy.
  2. Protect natural habitats
  3. Raise money to pay for these changes
  4. Work together with governments, businesses and communities to make real change happen.

“I’m so pleased to learn about the students’ hard work and creativity in these projects for COP26. This is an important time for us as a country, and as a global community, to come together to make the world a better place. It will take all of us together- whether we are students at St. Bernard’s Preparatory School, sustainability teams at a company, or volunteers in the community. Thank you, and keep up the great work!”

-Claire Lund; VP GSK Sustainability”

Flopkins

We would like to say a most heartfelt thank you to the Nagra family for donating Flopkins to St. Bernard’s Prep. They have not only donated a beautiful rabbit but lots of equipment to ensure that all children can access Flopkins safely. Mrs. Sugden and the Eco Council cannot thank them enough for their kindness and generosity.

Housekeeping

If you would like to join any of the clubs please email Mrs Wilson bursar@stbernardsprep.org and we can add them onto ParentMail for you. After seeing some of the brilliant dancing on show yesterday amongst the children can I recommend our StreetDance club, which runs on Friday afternoons. I think the children would love it!
