Bernie’s Journey: Trunks Across the Thames trail

It all began at the Windsor Flower Show, where our school first met Hope, a majestic painted elephant that sparked a wonderful idea. With the enthusiastic support of our Headteacher, Mrs Verma, St Bernard’s Prep set out on an exciting mission: to adopt a baby elephant for the Trunks Across the Thames trail in support of Thames Hospice.

The Making of a Masterpiece

Our elephant, Bernie, is a true school collaboration! The children submitted incredible designs, which were whittled down to a winning entry. Our talented creative, Miss Adams, then painstakingly hand-painted the design onto our baby elephant. The result is simply "Wow!"

The final artwork beautifully captures the heart of our school, featuring:

  • School Values: ‘Love, Work, Prayer’ and ‘Love one another’.

  • Spiritual Symbols: A depiction of the cross and the message ‘Jesus is the light of the world’.

  • Community Spirit: Hand-drawn illustrations of our pupils holding hands and motifs of ‘Creation’.

What’s in a Name?

We wanted a name that reflected the spirituality of elephants and the values of our school. After a democratic vote, using a ‘supermarket-style’ token system where children donated to vote, one name stood triumphant: Bernie.

Why Bernie?

  • Brave & Strong: Derived from Bernard, it represents the courage we see in our pupils every day.

  • Bringing Victory: From the Greek Pherenike, symbolising the personal triumph that comes from having a go without fear.

The Journey Continues...

Bernie has now joined his friends on the trail from Windsor through to Slough before making his way safely back to Thames Hospice.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Your generosity has been overwhelming. From dropping coins into the voting jars to supporting our fundraising events, you have made this possible.

We are so proud of our children’s commitment to the local community, and we will be continuing to raise funds for the Hospice for the remainder of the term. Every donation helps us support the vital work they do.
